Beyond the Books, New Commons Brings Social Learning Experience

After you read this, close your eyes…

Then, imagine the bottom floor of Olivet College’s Burrage Library covered with private study rooms for students. Envision a renovation that puts students and Information Technology Services (ITS) in the same location, so direct access is possible. And conjure up an instance where learning and fun and collaboration work as one in a college setting.

That vision is now a reality. Thanks to a lead gift from Steve ’82 and Melinda (Strother) ’82... Read more

The one-time home of late chemistry professor Fred Gruen, Ph.D., will soon serve as the nucleus of relationships-based education at Olivet College

This Old House

As a little girl, Carol Gruen '76 loved growing up in the town of Olivet. It wasn't just because of its small, safe atmosphere, or because her family's house had a huge backyard where she and her sister, Evelyn, could play. As the daughter of one of Olivet College's most beloved professors, Carol had the advantage of being immersed in college culture her whole life.

"Olivet was a... Read more

Helping Students Choose the Right Path

Being a college student is filled with difficult, albeit exciting, choices. It starts at the end of high school, when seniors are poring over college websites and applications, considering financial aid packages and trying to determine which school is the right fit. Then comes the important task of choosing a major, pursuing the degree and the most agonizing decision of all – what do I want to be when I finish college?

Even for students like 2014 graduate Maria “Ximena” Loza-Lopez, a motivated self-starter who excelled through... Read more

Why did you choose Olivet College?

I spent a year looking at colleges and universities in the Midwest. After touring several large university campuses, I knew I wanted a small college that would maximize my chances of getting into medical school.

I decided to attend Olivet College after meeting doctors Leah Knapp and Maria Davis. From the moment I walked into their office, I knew Olivet College would nurture me and my dreams. I knew instantly they were... Read more

A dual major in biology and environmental science, Katharine served as president of Olivet College’s Sigma Zeta chapter, a national mathematics, computer science and science honors society. In her time there, she presented on an agricultural product called PalisadeEC, a plant growth regulator used on wheat and other grains produced by Syngenta.

“I had originally created the poster as part of my internship last summer,” said Thelen. “In order to present the poster at the national convention, I worked one-on-one with Dr. Marcus Wasilevich to formulate and edit an abstract. By... Read more

Travon Tatum is a senior majoring in journalism and mass communication. He is a member of the Mu Omega Pi fraternity, a President’s Leadership Institute Fellow, a member of Olivet’s record-breaking 4x100 relay team, and is the official DJ for Olivet College and athletics.

For a student who participates in numerous activities that place him squarely in the limelight, he plans to pursue a career behind the scenes. “I want to go into the television field or maybe become a movie editor,” said Tatum. “I like taking raw video footage and turning it into something amazing.”

Making a Smooth Transition to Olivet College

In fall of 2013, sophomore Kaelin Cross made a decision to transfer schools.

She was worried about her future. Transitioning to Olivet College from Michigan State University (MSU) seemed daunting. But Cross, a sociology and anthropology major, chose Olivet because of its small size, family feel and its professors.

“I was not expecting the experience I have had at Olivet whatsoever,” said Cross. “At Michigan State, you don’t get to talk to your professors face-to-face. I went to lectures with 500 people who I didn’t know.”... Read more

KayDee Perry, assistant professor of health and human performance, runs a tight ship. She is the teacher-education preparation specialist in her department. With a primary focus on the physical education courses at Olivet College, she mentors countless students seeking to teach physical education when they graduate.

To see Perry work is like watching pure joy in action. She exudes verve.

In her “spare time,” Perry also coordinates fundraising and volunteer recruitment efforts on behalf of the Eaton County Special Olympics Field Day. A volunteer herself, she brings her... Read more

Olivet College recently had the opportunity to chat with Kelly about her Olivet experience – and how it helped prepare her for the opportunity of a lifetime.

Who: Kelly Schulze, 27, is from Kalamazoo. She graduated from Olivet College in 2009 and holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and anthropology from Olivet. Schulze worked as a conservation intern at Historic Royal Palaces and Plowden & Smith Conservation in London, and earned her master’s degree in objects conservation from University College London before joining the staff of... If you’ve ever visited the Olivet College campus and spent time with the students and staff, you quickly feel included. Whether it’s a smile from a student as you walk across the Square, or a warm greeting from a professor as you walk down the halls of Mott, you always feel welcome. That feeling of inclusiveness was one of the many reasons Xavier Vance decided to attend Olivet College.

Visiting Campus

Coming from a large high school in the Detroit suburb of West Bloomfield, Xavier wanted to attend a smaller school where she could have a closer relationship... Read more
